Apply for a Rewards Credit Card

A credit card that offers a rewards program will literally reward the cardholder for choosing that card. Reward programs fall into three general categories with cardholders accumulating points, air miles, or earning cash rebates whenever they make purchases with the card. Points can usually be used to redeem gift certificates, discounts, airline tickets, or anything the card issuer deems as eligible. Cash rebates may be received as gift certificates, credits to the account, or checks sent to the cardholder once the rebate amount reaches a certain minimum.

Rewards are usually linked to a certain brand or spending pattern, and it is important that the cardholder understand exactly which spending activities will generate points. Certain transactions such as balance transfers or cash advances will not generate points or rebates.

Cardholders who choose a credit card based on its rewards program should always aim to pay their balance in full each month. Accumulated interest charges will quickly outstrip the value of points or cash rebates. It is also worth noting that many products that are eligible to have points spent on them are priced above average. Issuers are also within their rights to alter policies at any time.
